| cord bound books
Cord bound books offer an exposed spine binding that lies flat when open without sacrificing durability. Executed in single or double cord versions, the cords are wrapped to the front and back covers, providing several opportunities for an elegant cover detail. Each binding is made up of a series of cords (usually 3 to 5) along the spine and is sewn with colored and waxed Irish linen thread. Cords can be made of several materials including hemp, organza or grossgrain ribbon, silk cords, or wire. Because the binding can be seen on the spine, complementary colors are chosen for the cover paper, cord material, and thread. This binding was self taught several years ago from Keith A. Smith's book Non-adhesive Binding, Books without Paste or Glue. |
