belgian bound books

Belgian bound books make ideal journals and are suitable for albums as well. They are rugged, flexible, and elegant all at once.

5x8" earth journal •banana leaf hardback covers and brown spine
•dark brown detail thread
•96 80-lb. text weight, earth tone pages
6x6" purple journal      •purple and gold flowered hardback covers
•yellow spine with purple detail thread
•inside gusseted pocket for storage

Boasting a tight, compact binding, the text block (the group of pages making up the inside of the book)
is sewn separately from the covers. This means that the cover can fold back on itself for ease in writing while still allowing
the pages to lie flat. Because there is no adhesive involved in the binding process, you never have to worry about the pages falling out.
A Belgian bound book makes an excellent choice for a journal in your studio, purse, and especially out in the field.

As a side note, this is my favorite of any binding that I've worked with or even seen. I learned it from Emily Martin
at Hollander's in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In bookbinding circles, this style is known as the Secret Belgian Binding. It's a historical binding
from the fifteenth or sixteenth century that was recently rediscovered by Hedi Kyle, who taught Emily this binding.
Only a single example of the historical binding exists, and it is surmised that this binding isn't well known because it was
a particular binder's "secret formula". For more information, visit Naughty Dog Press.
